Safer Together 2026 - New Ideas!
St Johns Neighborhood Association was awarded a start-up grant from the Portland Bureau of Emergency Management - PBEM - in late 2022 to launch Safer Together, a program designed to make it easy for residents to host block parties.
Below is a map of the Safer Together block parties that have been scheduled so far this year. It's still very early. Watch it grow! Read on and - why not? - add your own!
In 2023, 24 and 2025, you and your neighbors hosted almost 100 block parties, with an estimated two or three thousand people attending! We're here to help you host a Safer Together block party, and we've gotten good at making it easy.
Just as in the last three years, we can ...
Help you with planning - we have some hints to make planning your block party easy, fun and participative, and a manual that tells you everything we've learned over the last three years about hosting a block party.
Give you moral support - People who have hosted in the past have volunteered to be 'buddies' for people hosting now.
Lend you supplies - tents, tables, games, bouncy house, barricades.
Facilitate relations - We make it easy to get permission to close off your street and have Fire Station 22 send you a fire truck for the kids (and adults!) to enjoy.
We will bring a trained presenter from the St. Johns Cathedral Park NETs team to talk with you and your guests about staying safe and recovering quickly if there's an earthquake or other emergency. We can just about guarantee your guests will be interested!
If you have big dreams, like street painting or something else, talk to us - we have people with relevant experience who can share what they have learned.
Wait Wait - there's more! We have a projector and an outdoor screen. We can help you show movies at your block party, or - just call it a neighborhood movie night. We have a popcorn popper - you just need to have a dark enough space! We've helped local institutions hold larger parties, too. Just let us know. We'll support you in doing whatever you like to bring your street or block closer together, make new friends, and have a good time.
We have a form to fill so you can tell us what you are thinking, and then one of the Safer Together team will contact you. Just click here.
