Join the North Portland Public Safety Action Committee (PSAC)   Actively working at listening and watching and reporting can significantly help reduce crime rates.     PSAC is attended by your neighbors, as well as representatives from local neighborhood and business associations,   the Portland Police Bureau, the Bureau of Development Services and  the Multnomah County DA’s Office.     Meetings are held on the   4th Wednesday of each month at the   Historic Kenton Firehouse located at   2209 N.  Tree Inventory Summit Saturday, November 19, 2011 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.  St. Johns Community Center 8427 N. Central St.     Join us to explore results of the inventories and compare findings among neighborhoods. We will also share the largest trees and most unusual finds. And most importantly, we will begin creating neighborhood tree plans with your guidance and vision

A note about the St Johns entryway sign…      You can request messages for the entryway sign by contacting  Tom Stubblefield at  tstub@comcast.net.     The signs are for letting folks know about new businesses, old businesses, community events. Tom and the team review the requests and try to have each message up at least a week. Any questions need to be sent directly to Tom.     Thanks!

Library Events     FOR FAMILIES       Book Babies Storytime for children 0-12 months with adult. Mondays, 10-11 a.m.   Symphony Storytime The Oregon Symphony is on the road for interactive, musical storytimes. This series focuses on books, music, instruments, sound and fun. Each week features a visit from an Oregon Symphony musician who will play and provide an introduction to his or her instrument and orchestral music. Tuesdays, 3-4 p.m.     Toddler Storytime Storytime for children 24-36 months with adult. Fridays, 10-10:30 a.m.   Tiny Tots Storytime for children 12-24 months with adult. From the ravenous wallowing “Coyote and the Monster of Kamiah” myth, to the inspiring Snohomish legend called “Pushing up the Sky,” these stories bring us back to the beginning. Join professional storyteller Will Hornyak in this energetic and highly engaging performance. Made possible by the Grande Ronde Fund for Native American Collections & Programs of The Library Foundation. Doyle’s stunning fiction debut brings a small Oregon coast town to life through the jumbled lives and braided stories of its people. Although Neawanaka, Oregon, is impossible to find on a standard map, you should really spend some time there. It’s a magical coastal village with some “odd sweet corners,” very idiosyncratic residents and stories to last a lifetime. Wednesday, November 9, 6:30-7:45 p.m.   Read Another Way the River Has: Taut True Tales from the Northwest by Robin Cody Meet the author! Cody is an Oregon native who previously penned the Oregon Book Award winner Voyage of a Summer Sun. He’s part of that crew of Northwestern nature writers who articulate what it means to reside at the confluence of loggers and tree-huggers, hunters and hippies, Portland urbanites and Clatskanie farmers. In languorous, meandering prose, he glides from a history of the area’s humanity to ecstatic discourse on the spider that has taken up residence in his wooden boat, The Turtle. Monday, November 14, 1-2:30 p.m.    Life Is the Treasure: Okinawan Memories of WWII   Stories are important. They have the capacity to inspire, reflect, unite and mobilize a community. Professional storyteller Alton Chung will share a collection of riveting stories of integrity, courage and selflessness through the experiences of Nisei, Okinawans, and Hawaii Okinawans during WWII. These powerful tales bring to life incredible heroes to inspire and guide a new generation. Not recommended for children. Food and Clothing Donation Have extra winter clothes or blankets? It’s getting cold out there, and Portland’s homeless population could use all of the warmth we can give them. Please bring any clothing, sleeping bags or blankets you can spare into West Coast Fitness on the corner of Lombard and Buchanan. They will be delivered directly to Portland’s homeless population.           Grace Christian Fellowship 7325 N. The organization operates by funds received from membership dues and donations. A monthly membership fee of $20.00 plus volunteering 2 hours a month allows you to pick-up food twice a week.     Rivergate Food Pantry   4737 N Lombard  (503) 285-3138 Tuesdays and Sundays  Non-perishable food is available Tuesdays from 11:00 AM until 1:00 PM and Sundays from 9:30 AM until 12:30 PM.  They can also call the church office at  503-285-3138 to see about other times.     St. Andrew’s Episcopal Pantry   7704 N. Hereford Avenue   (503) 247-3511   herefordpantry@gmail.com Our pantry is now open a third day, Sunday. We are open Friday and Saturday at Noon and Sunday from 1 p.m.. We close at 3 p.m. or after we have served 20 clients. On Fridays and Saturdays we are very busy and close early. Sunday is still the slower day to visit. N. Hereford Avenue is located between N. Lombard (#75 bus) and N. Willis (#35 bus). Wheelchair access and plenty of free parking at the church next door. We also serve the working poor. You may shop for 3 to 5 days of food for your family. The policies are determined by a Board of Trustees from the churches and community. We serve the unemployed, the under-employed who cannot support their families because lack of full time employment and perhaps face medical bills due to lack of medical insurance; Senior citizens trying to scrape by on Social Security; in fact, ANYONE IN NEED.
