Plant Trees with SOLV

SOLVkidsimage

SOLV would like to invite you, your family, and friends to plant trees at Baltimore Woods in St Johns on Saturday, October 8th and October 29th!

We will be working from 9:00am to 12:00pm and all tools, gloves and supplies will be provided. By planting native trees and shrubs, volunteers will be lowering stream temperatures and creating an ecosystem that will filter polluted stormwater runoff, improve water quality, provide better habitat for wildlife, and be more resilient to climate change.

Baltimore Woods is a unique habitat consisting of oak woodlands, a once common habitat of the Willamette Valley that is quickly disappearing. The site provides a valuable buffer between the neighborhood and the bustling Port of Portland facility along the Willamette River.

If you would like to help restore Baltimore Woods please visit the Team Up website and register for a planting- or call 503-844-9571 x332.

Put on your boots, grab a shovel, and come dig in! We hope to see you out in your watershed!

New Curbside Composting, Recycling and Garbage Service begins October 31!

Starting October 31st, most Portland residents will be able to add food scraps, along with yard debris, to their green Portland Composts! roll carts. As part of this new service, collection of the green Portland Composts! roll cart will increase to weekly, and garbage collection will change to every other week. The blue Portland Recycles! roll cart and yellow glass recycling bin will continue with weekly collection. These changes apply to all single-family households and buildings with four or fewer units.

With the new service, instead of throwing away things like meat, dairy, bones and grains, residents will be able to send food scraps to local composting facilities where they will be turned into a nutrient-rich compost for fertilizing yards and gardens. For more information,

Pageturners

Read “The Reluctant Mr. Darwin: An Intimate Portrait of Charles Darwin and the Making of His Theory of Evolution” by David Quammen. What sets this little missive apart from other books about Darwin, is that it totally ignores the years of travel on HMS Beagle and begins with what happened afterwards. Quammen gives us a great biography of Darwin, without all the fawning to the ‘great man’ and gives us the actual man (one who was a hypochondriac and probably suffered from bouts of anxiety and had trouble dealing with the ‘real’ world), with all his warts.
Monday, October 10th, 1- 2:30 p.m.

Pageturners
Engage in stimulating conversation about books, exhange perspectives about characters and plot, and get to know your neighbors.

Read “Triangle: The Fire That Changed America” by David Von Drehle. On March 25, 1911, 146 workers, mostly young immigrant women, lost their lives in minutes when a fire raced through their workplace and they could not escape because of a locked exit. Until Sept. 11, 2001, it was the worst loss of life in New York City. It remains one of the most important chapters in American labor history.

Credit Score Got You Down?
